U of T's Rotman Commerce Design by Danish Architects 3XN Unveiled
Celebrating a century of shaping future business leaders, the University of Toronto's Rotman Commerce undergraduate business program is set to have its own building on the St George campus with the development of a new five-storey institutional space. Designed by the renowned Danish architectural firm 3XN, with Arcadis serving as both the Executive Architect and Landscape Architect, it comes a century after the program's first students graduated in June, 1924. Looking northwest to University of Toronto's Rotman Commerce Building, designed by 3XN and Arcadis Situated at 90 Devonshire Place, south of Bloor Street and north of Hoskin Avenue, the site currently contains a vacant parking lot just south of U of T’s Goldring Centre fro High Performance Sport. The new five-storey Rotman Commerce building will consolidate the program’s facilities, previously dispersed across four locations, into a single, contiguous space. The Danish influence is on full display with the architectural vision, seen at other 3XN developments like T3 Bayside, with a focus on natural materials and connectivity. This is evident in the building's layout, which will feature a terraced atrium will rise through the building, with diagonal, double-height terraces, forming a social spine meant to invite interaction and collaboration, and guiding the flow from communal spaces on the lower floors to quieter areas on the upper levels. The facade, with framed views of St Hilda’s Lawn and the Varsity Centre, strengthens its connection to the campus. Interior space, designed by 3XN and Arcadis The massing will transition from the larger city-scale structures closer to Bloor Street to the north and the more intimate scale of St Hilda’s College to the south. From west to east, the design steps down from the recently completed Woodsworth Academic building to the Varsity Centre. With warm wood tones and an open concept, the design allows for abundant natural light to dominate the interiors. Looking southwest to University of Toronto's Rotman Commerce Building, designed by 3XN and Arcadis Rotman Commerce’s new home will house a variety of features including state-of-the-art classrooms, expansive student activity spaces, and designated areas for student clubs. Placed close to the ground and on the second floor, the classrooms are designed to efficiently manage the high volume of daily foot traffic. The building will also feature two below-ground levels, designed to house additional learning spaces and technical facilities. Interior space, designed by 3XN and Arcadis Encouraging a supportive environment, it will also include essential support units such as Academic and Career Services, Student Life, and the Centre for Professional Skills. A large 200-seat event space and a café on the ground floor further enhance the building's role as a central gathering place. Jens Holm, Partner in Charge for 3XN in North America, encapsulates the firm’s vision: “Our intention for the Rotman Commerce building is to create a space that prepares the students for their future careers in business. …We wanted to create a space that ensures that connecting and sharing ideas with one another become instinctive to the users’ everyday lives.” 3XN's holistic approach aims to ensure the Rotman Commerce project stands as both an academic building and a hub of activity and interaction.
